UK Children Getting Food Aid for the First Time in 70 Years

One must always remember the contradictions of capitalism. You may be the wealthiest country, but in sections of the population, you will not see that greatness manifested. Even as the US and the UK represent the richest countries in the world, they have a poverty problem that goes largely ignored by the mainstream media. A visage which must always be hidden, if only acknowledged in a 10 second sound or video-byte. However, such a reality cannot be hidden from the people for long because they live it.

Case in point:

UNICEF, also known as the United Nations Children's Fund, has announced they will be sending a domestic emergency response to the United Kingdom for the first time in seventy years. The international food humanitarian food-aid organization will be sending supplies to one of the richest countries in the world. Think about that for a moment.

The organization says that the current COVID-19 pandemic has severely undermined the ability of the UK population to feed their children. They’re calling it the most urgent crisis affecting children since the Second World War. How bad is this situation? Well, it's described this way in The Guardian:

“A YouGov poll in May commissioned by the charity Food Foundation found 2.4 million children (17%) were living in food insecure households. By October, an extra 900,000 children had been registered for free school meals.”

Unicef has promised to give £25,000 for the community project School Food Matters. That money will be used “to supply 18,000 nutritious breakfasts to 25 schools over the two-week Christmas holidays and February half-term, feeding vulnerable children and families in Southwark, south London, who have been severely impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.” In addition, the company Abel & Cole will also donate 1.2 tonnes of fruit and vegetables estimated at £4,500.

Anna Kettley, the director of programmes at Unicef UK, said: “This is Unicef’s first-ever emergency response within the UK, introduced to tackle the unprecedented impact of the coronavirus crisis and reach the families most in need.

“This funding will help build stronger communities as the impact of the pandemics worsen, but ultimately a longer-term solution is needed to tackle the root causes of food poverty, so no child is left to go hungry.”

Despite all the wealth the UK has plundered from the third world, they still struggle to feed their children. What kind of system does this to its people? What great victory of capitalism is this?

Have the elites forgotten to fear the impoverishment of its people?
